In order to further its’ goal of promoting the teaching of karate, GVKC has decided to introduce a merit award system, on a trial basis. It’s aim is to encourage, assess and reward students for their efforts and achievements in the many aspects of our karate syllabus. 

 It was felt that a grading interval of three or six months is too long for many students to retain their focus and motivation, and that a full grading examination, with no intermediate steps, was becoming too daunting for some of our students.

 We have therefore split much of the syllabus into “bite sized” pieces which will allow some portion to be assessed on a frequent, probably weekly
basis.  This also gives us the opportunity to address other problems. 

We can directly assess skills not specifically found in the grading examinations, and we can reassess these skills over a period of time to promote the idea that progress is not just about learning new techniques, but also about continual improvement of all skills.

When we assess the exercises, we will award one of four colour stars, to signify the standard achieved (according to the expected level for their grade).  When a student has accumulated three stars of a particular colour in their book, they will be awarded a star badge of the same colour. 

At the moment we are issuing these booklets to all established students at no charge.  (Any voluntary donation would be appreciated).  In future, we would expect to charge £5.00 to enter the scheme.  We may then make an annual charge, or possibly a charge per badge.  This will  depend  on how the scheme develops.  Any suggestions will be welcomed.
